Looking to start a chess club at your school? Here’s what you should do.

  1. Find a few partners to create the club with. Specifically look for people you work well with, play chess, or maybe have good knowledge on running a club or leading a group of people.

  2. Create a logo and mission statement. Depending on your school's requirements, write up a few sentences about what your club is and what its purpose is. Logos help attract attention and help your club become associated among students. You may have to get other students on board before your club is approved, depending on your school’s policies.

  3. Register your club with your school and if possible, for greater benefit, get an advisor. An advisor might be able to help you to receive a budget from a school committee, if your school has one.

  4. If you're looking to have a big, widespread club, create social media accounts for your activity! Social media is a great way to spread information quickly so having an online presence will definitely help expand your club. If you’re looking to keep it small however, that's okay too! Do keep in mind that you must be at least 13 years of age to use or create an account on most social media platforms. If you are under 13, look for a supervisor to run the account. This could be a parent, guardian, school staff member, (etc.). Lastly, make sure to keep the content school appropriate and focus on your related categories.

  5. Brainstorm ways to advertise your club, whether through reposts on social media, publicly announcing your club at school, or hanging up flyers with information!

  6. Set an initial interest meeting for people to come check out and see if they would want to join. Continue to hold meetings on a regular basis.

  7. You could organize group members by categories of experience and work with them. That could mean playing games, doing puzzles or analyzing!

  8. Introduce tournament days and find a way that you prefer to allow players to sign-up. Get the playing team running.

There you have it! As the club grows in size and more and more players join, you could consider taking the team to nationals or other big tournaments.
