On May 1st, a group of girls and I organized a chess competition to support Ukraine. Known as “A Move for Ukraine,” the tournament donated to Project Kesher, a fundraiser created to support women and children in Ukraine during the war. The fundraiser does so by aiding crisis support for women trapped in cities under siege, and by providing transportation and accommodations for those moving to safety. Additionally, Project Kesher assists with emergency mental health support, the process of aliyah, immigration to Israel, and refugee resettlement in Europe.

The competition was hosted for players of all ratings on Lichess.org, and the cost of registering was $15 per person (additional donations were encouraged). Once the tournament was over, we raised almost $5,000 –– an incredible amount of money.

It was such an amazing experience, I don’t even know where to begin. Working with the other girls to organize this tournament (Ariella Goloborodsky, Hallie Kopel, Eleanor Nayden, and Soleil Wizman) was a pleasure. They were all extremely kind and we were able to quickly begin working on organizing the tournament. Even though we encountered challenges, we were able to put together a great and successful event. Although the tournament was just for fun and wasn’t USCF rated, everyone played amazing games. It ran for around an hour and a half, with about 32 participants. Overall, I’m so grateful that I was able to contribute to such a significant cause.

It’s important to note that although the official tournament is over, the war is not. Even now, people are still dying and getting injured fighting for their lives in Ukraine. Therefore, the fundraiser is still up. I strongly encourage anyone reading this to donate an amount of money –– no matter how small.  Any donation will make a difference.
